INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS

These are projects that each student came up with at the end of the Introductory Course. They are inspired by various aspects of Skálholt, such as its history, nature, landscape and sounds.

FIVE SOUNDS

Álvar Rosell Martín

Using five sounds inspired by the natural environment around Skálholt comes this small sound and visual narration of the adventures of a fly, probably the only inhabitant of this impressive place in the middle of nowhere, which was our companion during all our breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Ana Luisa Diaz de Cossio

For this project I used field recordings from nature and others from exercises we did during our stay in Skáholt and surroundings. I put together a track that we used as background in this recording. In the track you can hear sounds of nature, us singing. The end of it is the same kind of material but it is not recognizable because of all the processing.
Khetsin and me are improvising in top of the recording and Freya helped us to make the recording. This recording was made at Safnahúsið in Reykjavik.

EQUALITY

Anna Iachino

Sound Poetry created with the sounds of nature recorded earlier in the day around Skálholt.  The poem begins with the sound of water. The first line of the poem starts with, “The Age of Aquarius is among us”.  Aquarius is Latin for “water-bearer” or “cup-carrier” and its symbol is a representation of water.  In the middle of the poem, we hear the sound of stomping on dry leaves, almost like a marching rhythm representing the old paradigm of the patriarchal system.  Towards the end of the poem is a more beautiful sound of water – hope for a better tomorrow - the Age of Aquarius.

STRANGE OBJECT I & II

Khetsin Chuchan

In the morning we barged through the woodland of Skálholt. Seeing us standing among the pine trees made me realize that we were indeed a strange object. This scene was an inspiration for Strange Object I. This sound piece is a combination of the field recordings of Skálholt's surroundings - the sound of a brook, birds, the sound of me walking on gravel, etc. - and our singing inside Kerið volcanic crater.

Strange Object II is made after the trip. It is a subsequent experimentation on how recording could be transformed, distorted, and composed into something different from its origin.

Í GÖNGUFERР- FOR A WALK

Sólrún Hedda Benedikz

We are going for a walk together around Skálholt. In the background, a soundscape of Skálholt, the environment, people, textures and nature, explored through the soles of the feet. A steady rhythm of footsteps leads us down a sandy path, through some mud and leaves, into the church and all the way up to an old bible sitting in a corner. The pages turn and we return.

The piece is to be experienced with the audience spread on chairs throughout a room, with their eyes closed and their shoes off. The performer walks among the audience in rhythm with the footsteps of the soundscape, the audience members move their feet as well and feel their connection to the floor while experiencing various auditory textures of feet touching different ground and the performer coming closer and moving further away, the floor and air moving with them.
