How does a place sound? Is sound also a place? How do we perceive a place through sonic experiences?
In the Fall of 2020, a group of students and faculty from the NAIP programme at Iceland University of the Arts went to Skálholt to explore the questions above. The schedule consisted of daily workshops guided by sound artist Þóranna Björnsdóttir and faculty members Berglind María Tómasdóttir and Sigurður Halldórsson, as well as sessions in which students worked independently on various sonic explorations. The goal was to create a dynamic and open dialogue amongst all participants through the artistic explorations, mentoring sessions and other activites such as cooking together.
The place was navigated from a historical and cultural point of view and various activities aiming at connecting to the place were executed. This included mapping, memorising, sound-hunting, Deep-listening and other transformative exercises, as individuals and as a collective of creative artists.
The results from the week-long residency at Skálholt can be explored through this website.
Enjoy!
